Prof. Krzysztof Pyrć

Krzysztof Pyrć is a Professor at Jagiellonian University, where he heads up the Virology Laboratory at the Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology. He is also President of the Foundation for Polish Science. He graduated in molecular biology from Jagiellonian University and obtained his PhD at the University of Amsterdam.

With over 20 years of experience in virology, his research focuses on virus–host interactions, mechanisms of infection and the development of antiviral strategies. His team uses advanced in vitro models, including three-dimensional tissue cultures and organoids, to investigate human and animal viruses and evaluate potential therapeutics. His work combines fundamental research with translational applications, supported by extensive experience in international research collaborations, patented technologies and biomedical spin-off companies.

Within MERIT, Prof. Pyrć will jointly lead the team with Prof. Aleksandra Milewska and serve as a co-supervisor of doctoral researchers.
